Post electoral: legislative elections in Mexico – 2021

Amid low turnout, episodes of violence and biosecurity protocols to prevent COVID-19 infections, Mexico held its legislative and sub-national elections. The result was bittersweet for the ruling party and its pretensions to consollidate its “Fourth Transformation”: it was the most voted-for party and retained its simple majority together with its allies in the Chamber of Deputies, but lost its overall majority that had allowed it to approve constitutional reforms without the need for opposition backing. On the other hand, at the sub-national level, the ruling party obtained 12 out of the 15 governorships at stake and consolidated its power.
