Pre electoral: presidential and legislative elections in Costa Rica
Next Sunday, presidential and legislative elections will be held in Costa Rica. Up for grabs is the presidency of the nation as well as all the 57 Deputy seats of the Legislative Assembly for the period 2022-2026. With over 30% of the electorate currently undecided, there is great uncertainty over the outcome and with few ruling out a surprise result. Against the backdrop of a weakened ruling party, and a traditional opposition seemingly unable to mount a challenge, only three candidates command polling voting intentions above 15%. The first two hail from the country’s traditional parties: José María Figueres of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) and Lineth Saborío of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC). Currently close to these, in third, is the conservative runner Fabricio Alvarado, of the recently created Partido Nueva Republica (PNR).
