Post-election Report: Presidential runoff elections in Uruguay

Uruguay’s next president will be Yamandú Orsi. The Frente Amplio ticket secured 49.8% of the votes, defeating Álvaro Delgado of the Partido Nacional, who obtained 45.9%. Orsi will take office on March 1.

Despite the loss, Álvaro Delgado improved his electoral performance in most departments compared to the first round. He outperformed Yamandú Orsi in 14 of
19 departments, while the Frente Amplio secured victories in Canelones, Montevideo, Salto, Paysandú, and San José.

Orsi will govern with a majority in the Senate. However, in the House of Representatives, he will need to build alliances to pass his initiatives. With the coalition parties out of government, it remains to be seen whether they will act as a unified bloc or adopt an independent stance. The new Congress will convene on February 15.

Orsi’s victory speech focused on three main points: acknowledging the party’s supporters, delivering a message of inclusion for those who did not vote for him, and reaffirming his commitment to Uruguay’s party system and democracy. He pledged to be a “conciliatory president”, dedicated to promoting unity.
