AOG 2025: DL Calls for Strengthening Transparency and Citizen Participation in Extractive Industries

The Executive Director of Directorio Legislativo, Noel Alonso Murray, took part in the panel “Transparency in Extractive Industries: The Challenge of Informing, Engaging, and Building Trust”, organized by EITI Argentina at the Argentina Oil & Gas (AOG) Exhibition 2025, held this week at La Rural in Buenos Aires.
In her role as civil society representative on EITI Argentina’s multi-stakeholder group—whose mission is to promote open management of hydrocarbon and mining resources—Alonso Murray addressed the key challenges facing the extractive sector in Argentina regarding transparency and citizen participation.
She stressed that it is essential for published data to actually reach communities so they can make informed decisions, and highlighted the responsibility of journalists, academia, and civil society organizations to translate data into information that is useful for those directly impacted by extractive activities.

Alonso Murray also emphasized the importance of more Argentine provinces joining the global transparency standard for extractive industries, as already done by Catamarca, Jujuy, Mendoza, Salta, Santa Cruz, San Juan, and Río Negro, with special attention to Neuquén. She noted that it is crucial to work with its provincial government so that Neuquén is included in the next report.
At the close of the event, Florencia Mazzinghi, Director of Transparency and Mining Information at the Undersecretariat of Mining Development (Secretariat of Mining, Ministry of Economy), highlighted the collaborative work being carried out among government, industry, and civil society—the three parties that make up EITI Argentina. She said this not only brings greater credibility but also strengthens transparency in extractive industries.
Mazzinghi also pointed out that the main pending task is clearer and more accessible communication so that the initiative reaches a broader audience and becomes better known.
Other participants in the conference included Antonio Milanese (Undersecretary of Energy Transition and Planning, Secretariat of Energy), Luciano Codeseira (Fundar consultant), Carlos Freytes (Director of Natural Resources, Fundar), Mario Figueroa (Secretary of Institutional Relations, Secretariat of Energy of Río Negro), and Adriano D’Agostino (Tax Manager, Total Energies). The panel was moderated by Nicolás Gandini, Director of EconoJournal.
