Post-elections: Legislative elections in Colombia

With 23% of the vote, the ruling coalition Pacto Histórico emerged on Sunday as the leading force in Congress, while Centro Democrático, with 16%, became the second most voted party.

The results leave a Congress without a majority for any single party. Although Pacto Histórico managed to increase its number of seats in both chambers, it will still need to negotiate with other political forces to advance its legislative agenda.

At the same time, three coalitions held internal consultations ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for May 31. Paloma Valencia (Centro Democrático) won the center-right primary and is emerging as a competitive candidate for the first round, facing Iván Cepeda (Pacto Histórico) and Abelardo de la Espriella (Defensores de la Patria).
