Preelection: General elections in Costa Rica

On February 1, Costa Rica will elect a president and renew its 57 members of the Legislative Assembly for the 2026–2030 term. The new Congress will take office on May 1, while the president will be sworn in on May 8.

Polls place ruling-party candidate Laura Fernández (People’s Sovereign Party) in first place, with close to 40% of voting intention. She is followed by Álvaro Ramos (National Liberation Party) with less than 10%. Trailing behind are Claudia Dobles (CAC), Fabricio Alvarado (NR), and Ariel Robles (FA), all polling between 3% and 5%.

If no candidate reaches the 40% threshold, a runoff election will be held on April 5. With more than 30% of voters still undecided, the outcome remains open between a first-round victory and a second round.
